A JET's journey through Ako, Japan...
Dinner With Miyuki

I had dinner with Miyuki last night, at the izakaya I'd gone to with Kazu a few weeks ago. It was good to see her outside of her work, for once, as we could talk uninterrupted. Over various wonderful izakaya foods and drinks, we had a rather amusing conversation. Miyuki's English is not very strong at all, so we spoke mostly in Japanese. I'm getting much better but I'm still severely limited in vocab and to a lesser extent, grammar patterns. So there was a lot of ' koto ga desu ka (have you ever / do you ?) going on, haha. Although the conversation was very simple, we covered a lot and I learnt a few cool things about Miyuki. I was proud that I'd learnt enough Japanese to be able to do that, and in general, to maintain at least a somewhat decent conversation over a period of time like a dinner.

And strangely enough, it was more interesting than a lot of conversations I've had with people that can speak fluent English. So there you go, hehe. I didn't get too big a head about it all, however, as Miyuki would occasionally let rip with some normal speed Japanese and I wouldn't be able to recognise any of the words, resulting in all kinds of crazy antics to try to explain it, haha. I've still got a way to go, but definitely beginning to get there. It's exponential, I think, so hopefully this means I'm beginning to start a quicker climb up the curve :)
